Best Idaho 12er to Start With (Beginner to Advanced Guide)
Before jumping into the list, it is worth noting that there is no true consensus ranking for Idaho’s 12ers from easiest to hardest. Every hiker brings a different skill set and comfort level to the mountains. Some enjoy scrambling while others avoid it. Some are unfazed by exposure while others find cliffs mentally exhausting. Some are comfortable with off-trail travel while others are more likely to get off route. This list is a general guide based on my own experience, along with conversations I have had with hundreds of hikers. Your experience may vary.

Best Idaho 12er for Beginners
Hyndman Peak
Hyndman Peak is often the best introduction to Idaho’s 12ers. The route is long, but less technical than most Lost River peaks and offers one of the most scenic approaches in the state.
Best Intermediate Option
Mount Breitenbach
Mount Breitenbach is one of the more approachable Lost River 12ers, offering a mix of scenic approach and manageable Class 3 terrain. It’s a strong progression peak after Hyndman.
Most Popular First Attempt
Borah Peak
Borah Peak is Idaho’s highest mountain and often the first people attempt. The exposure on Chicken Out Ridge makes it more serious than many expect.
Harder Idaho 12ers
Mount Church
Mount Church, typically climbed with Donaldson Peak, involves extended ridge travel and exposed Class 3 scrambling. It is best suited for hikers comfortable with exposure and longer alpine days.
Mount Idaho
Mount Idaho features steep talus chutes and route-finding challenges, making it one of the rougher Lost River climbs.
Lost River Peak
Despite its short mileage, Lost River Peak’s steep scree-filled Super Gully makes it one of the most exhausting climbs on the list.
